Position Title:              Financial Accountant
Division: Fiscal Operations
Union: Teamsters Local 916/Illinois Federation of Teachers Local Union 4460
Location: Springfield, Illinois
Salary: $50,000-Pusuant Teachers/Teamsters Collective Bargaining Agreement

 

Position Summary: The Financial Accountant in the Fiscal Operations Division is responsible for data entry, preparing financial reports, performing reconciliations, and serving in the Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable function. This position is responsible for ensuring accurate recording and reporting of financial transactions and ensuring that accounting activities are in accordance with established legal, regulatory, and organizational procedures. Attendance is an essential function of this position.

 

  Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Prepares financial reports including GAAP reports, and financial statements for submission to the Illinois Office of the Comptroller.
  • Processes and inputs data in applicable systems.
  • Reviews accounting data, performs edits and corrective actions to ensure the accuracy of data, files and records.
  • Performs detailed reconciliations.
  • Reviews legislation, rules and regulations to determine impact on operations.
  • Files and maintains information and supporting documents as necessary.
  • Responds to phone inquiries.
  • Performs Accounts Payable functions which includes the review and processing of vouchers for timely payment and entry and review of information regarding the deposit of receipts.
  • Provides back-up to other Fiscal staff as needed.
  • Performs special projects as requested.
  • Responds to inquiries made by internal and external auditor.
  • Processes various requests for the Unclaimed Property Division.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably related to the duties enumerated above.

Specific Skills:

  • Knowledge of the theories, principles, practices, and terminology of governmental accounting.
  • Excellent communication, organizational and analytical skills.
  • Ability to multi-task and work in a team environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Access, and Word.
  • Ability to perform detailed work involving written or numerical data including making calculations rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to maintain satisfactory working relationships and communicate effectively with all levels of staff and the  public.

Education and Work Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance; two (2) or more years of experience in government accounting or auditing; OR any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to carry out the duties of the position.
